The practical driving test is conducted by Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and can be taken at your local driving test centre in Luton. The practical driving test lasts for around 40 minutes and during the test you will need to show the driving test examiner that you can drive to a good safe staandard. The practical driving test consists of 3 parts which are the eyesight check, the car safety questions and the main driving section. These are described below:
- Driving Test Eyesight Check
The driving test will begin with a test of your eyesight. The driving examiner will ask you to read a vehicle number plate from a legal minimum required distance of 20 metres or 20.5 metres (old styled number plate). You must be able to read the number plate with the aid of glasses or contact lenses if you need them from the required distance in good daylight conditions. Failure to achieve this is likely to result with the driving test being voided and you are likely to lose your driving test fee. Essential, make sure your eyesight is up to scratch.
- Driving Test Car Safety (Show Me, Tell Me) Questions
The driving examiner will ask you to answer or demonstrate 2 car safety questions. These car safety checks are simple but vital checks which all drivers should do on a regular basis. - Driving Test Main Driving Section
During the driving section you will be driving on a wide range of roads in various traffic situations around the driving test areas of Luton. The driving examiners will start by giving you a short brief on how the driving test will be conducted and will give you clear directions on where they would like you to go during the driving test. The driving test will also consist of 2 reversing exercises and maybe an emegency stop controlled exercise. The will also be an independant driving sections where you will need to show that you can drive unaided to a specifed destination. You will finish driving test back at the driving test centre in Luton where the driving examiner will give you the result of your driving test.
Passing your driving test
To pass your driving test you will need to drive to a good safe standard. The driving exmainer will use a driving test marking sheet to log any errors which are made during the driving test. To pass the driving test you must avoid:
- Commiting any more than 15 minor driving faults
- Commiting any serious or dangerous driving faults
With driving test success you will be given a D10 form which will be required when applying for your full driving licence. You will also be give other useful informations for improving you driving such as information about
Pass Plus. You will need to apply for you full driving licence within 2 years of passing the practical driving test otherwise you may need to retake another driving test as the D10 form will become void.
